What license do you need?

Most likely you’ll want an OUPV, commonly referred to as a “6-pack”. This license lets you carry 6 paying passengers. Whether you’re a skiff guide polling clients on to tailing reds or taking a big cat out to the shelf, this license was made for FISHING captains and allows you to run an uninspected vessel - making it easier to take the boat you probably already have to start running trips.

What qualifications do you need to get it?

You need to document and record at least 360 days of sea time. A day is at least 4 hours and your sea time can date back to your 16th birthday. 90 of these days must have been within the last 3 years.

Does my boat count for sea time?

Yes, you can record your hours on any boat. If it's not your boat you’ll just need the owner to sign off. Any little skiff counts towards your hours, but if you record your hours on a small boat on inland waters, you won’t be issued a near-coastal license and can’t run trips out in the ocean.

Do I have to go to school?

Yes, you’ll have to take a class to get your 6 pack. You can get it online or go in person to a school or class. We recommend a real in-person class, you’ll learn a lot more and meet like-minded, potentially life long friends. When the swell picks up, you’ll want a captain who knows the deal, not some ChatGPT online learner.

What else do I need?

Other than passing a class and getting your hours you’ll need a CPR certification, background check, a physical, and a drug test. Get this all together and mail it to the coast guard. If you did it all right you're ready to get in the biz!

Advice from our Captains

“Want to make people's dreams come true, while living vicariously through their lives? Are you a dream catcher, weather God, therapist, and grinding workaholic? If so, you can have the best view in all of the job market as long as you’re fine with heavy stress, a tendency to mumble to yourself, and the opportunity to be professionally poor. If that fits your mindset and you’re somewhat fishy, why not look into becoming a charter captain or fishing guide?”

 -Capt. Mike Holliday

“Have you ever wanted to be broker than you’ve ever been before and help other people catch fish while you sit and stare? Become a captain.”

-Capt. Matt Omlor
