Listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, these Arizona natives were facing extinction nearly 70 years ago. Overfishing, grazing and interaction with introduced non-native brook, brown and rainbow trout pushed the few Apache Trout left to leave. They swam upstream to the headwaters. Here they found refuge.

This zone was governed by the White Mountain Apache Tribe, and these trout were protected within the reservation. Since 1955 the population has rebounded. With help from the Apache tribe, and Trout Unlimited, for the first time ever a trout was removed from the endangered species list.

The days of catching these creek critters are no longer behind us. If things continue to go to plan, future generations will be able to pursue these native trout in the unique tributaries of central Arizona.

"These glasses fit great. The mirrored green lenses cut down on the bright glare of my local rivers. I’ve been recommending them to all my fishing pals."
