We sat down with Rodrigo Salles, CEO and Co-Owner of Untamed Angling in Brazil. He’s a jungle legend, die-hard Bajío ambassador, and tannic water expert. Here’s what he had to say.
Where Do You Fish?
As a Brazilian, my home waters are the jungle rivers of the Amazon, both in Brazil and Bolivia. It was while working in the depths of indigenous reserves that I discovered the perfect remote waters to dedicate my life to fishing. The jungle has profoundly shaped me as an angler.
What do you fish for?
I feel blessed to have access to truly virgin waters in the Amazon and to have deepened my understanding of the indigenous peoples who have ancestrally inhabited them. I've spent my entire life fishing in the jungle for species like Peacock Bass, Dorado, Pacu, and many others. We've also opened some doors to anglers, offering experiences with species like Arapaima, Payara, Arowana, Matrinxa, Bicuda, Tambaqui and more. Jungle fly fishing is no longer just about exotic destinations; for me, it represents an entirely new world of possibilities and is one of the last frontiers in fly fishing.
What's Your Favorite Lens?
My favorite all-around lens is the Green Mirror. It allows me to spot fish in a wide variety of jungle environments and sunlight conditions. This was until I found a total game changer for me - the Violet Mirror lens.
I find it perfect for sight fishing for Peacock Bass in the black tannic waters of the jungle. It allows me to see more, see further into the water, and catch more fish in variable light conditions.
