The Fish With A Death Wish
Imagine you're the smallest freshman, walking through the senior parking lot after reporting the 6th-generation school bully for underage drinking. That’s how it feels to be a mullet in October.
Everyone wants to eat you alive, knock your head off, cut you in half, sink you, float you, and push you up against something solid until you quit.
Like us, you're probably wondering why? If you're that freshman, why not get dropped off at the door? Why run the gauntlet when you could easily avoid it?
The Destination and the Journey
When the temps start to drop, mullet get the urge. It's time to head south and eventually spawn. They make the long trip down the East Coast, with sunny South Florida their ultimate goal. All fall, into winter, they dip and dive snook, sharks, and school bullies.
They go from freshwater estuaries, many of which lack salt or oxygen, into the whirlpool of salt, sand, and sea we call the Atlantic Ocean. They’re tough little critters with the ability to adapt to their new environment.
Once far enough south, they head out into the blue. The serious blue! Sometimes spawning 50 miles off in four-digit depths. Your average striped mullet is more traveled than your favorite Tumblr girl. The one who “traded money for travel” and is “studying” yoga in Bali to ground herself.
They’re small but mighty, and we appreciate the fishery they bring and the journey they make.
